DRHS Releases Limited Duxbury Map Reprints

[Image shows only a portion of the full map]

The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society’s Publications Committee is pleased to offer limited edition reproductions of the 1903 Duxbury Village Map.

The 23” by 29” reproduction of the village map from the 1903 Atlas of Plymouth County is printed in full color on acid-free paper.  This most detailed of all historical maps of Duxbury shows houses, outbuildings, roads, property lines, and landowner names in Duxbury’s coastal area.  The map includes Millbrook, Powder Point, Snug Harbor, Halls Corner and a portion of Standish Shore.

According to local map expert, Dr. David Corey, “The 1903 atlas maps of Duxbury…illustrate the transformation of Duxbury into a community of wealthy summer residents.  We see on the map many named estates: the Wright Estate on St. George Street; Hautboy Castle and Bay View Cottage on the south shore of the Bluefish River, once the site of the shipbuilding industry; and the estate of the actress Fannie Davenport, near Eagle’s Nest.  The nascent Duxbury Yacht Club, then at the end of Freeman Place, first appears on this map.  Shown also is the Powder Point Bridge, given the picturesque name ‘Highway to the Sea,’ which would have been a hindrance to navigation in an earlier time but was clearly useful to a summer vacationer.”
