January 20 Annual Meeting, The Village at Duxbury, 6:30 p.m.
February 18 "The Making of In the Days of King Caesar," Hoyt Reading Room, Wright Building, 7 p.m. Part of the Sarah Wingate Taylor Lecture Series. No charge. There will be a special showing of the Society's new mini-documentary on the King Caesar Estate, after which Animation Designer Bryan Felty and DRHS Director Patrick Browne will discuss the process of making the video.
March 4 Oral History Project Workshop, Hoyt Reading Room, Wright Building, 7 p.m. No charge. Join an exciting project. Volunteers are needed to help interview Duxbury residents and collect stories from Duxbury's recent history. Archivist Carolyn Ravenscroft will lead a workshop to get our new oral history project organized and underway.
March 18 Letter Reading: “The Smith/McLaughlin Papers,” Hoyt Reading Room, Wright Building, 7 p.m. No charge. Selections from a relatively recently acquired letter collection will be read. The men of the Smith Family were involved in seafaring and shipbuilding. The women of another branch of the family, the McLaughlins, were suffragettes.
April 10 South Shore History Symposium, “Summer Folk: The Story of Tourism on the South Shore.” Church of the Pilgrimage, Plymouth, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. $15. Coordinated by Backroads of the South Shore, a consortium of local historical societies. Speakers from historical organizations across the South Shore will discuss the influx of “Summer Folk,” beginning in the late nineteenth century, a phenomenon that altered many South Shore towns.
May 20 Letter Reading: “World War I Letters,” Hoyt Reading Room, Wright Building, 7 p.m. No charge. In celebration of the upcoming rededication of Duxbury’s World War I Monument, the reading will feature letters in our collection related to “The Great War.”
June 25 Special Exhibits Preview Reception, King Caesar House, 6-8 p.m. No charge. Refreshments served. Come celebrate the opening of our new exhibits in the King Caesar House, "Life on the Quarterdeck: Duxbury Sea Captains" and "Women's Work: Duxbury Quilts."
July 8 King Caesar Barn Lecture, Jan Turnquist, Executive Director, Orchard House, Concord, A Morning with Louisa May Alcott, 10 a.m. $5.
July 22 King Caesar Barn Lecture, Stephen Puleo on his new book, A City So Grand: The Rise of an American Metropolis, Boston 1850-1900, 10 a.m. $5.
July 25 Clark’s Island Picnic, Cedarfield, 11-2 p.m. No charge. A chance to visit historic Clark's Island in Plymouth Bay. Pack a lunch, head to the Island and enjoy a beautiful and historic setting.
August 5 King Caesar Barn Lecture, Patricia Gilrein, Curator, Duxbury Rural and Historical Society on our new exhibit Life on the Quarterdeck: Duxbury Sea Captains, 10 a.m. $5.
August 19 King Caesar Barn Lecture, Ted Clark, on his new book, Taking the High Ground: How Boston Broke the British Grip, 10 a.m. $5.
October 3 King Caesar’s Autumnfest, King Caesar House, 120 King Caesar Road, 12-4 p.m. $5 Adults, $3 children, maximum $20 per family. Enjoy our annual event for families! The afternoon will feature nautical music, demonstrations by Civil War reenactors, wagon rides pulled by the Clydesdales of Hobby Knoll Farm, games and much more.
October 14 Letter Reading, Hoyt Reading Room, Wright Building, 7 p.m. No charge.
October 28 "Annie Ricketson's Journal," Hoyt Reading Room, Wright Building, 7 p.m. Part of the Sarah Wingate Taylor Lecture Series. No charge. Duxbury resident Laura Doherty will speak on her new book, Annie Ricketson's Journal, about her ancestor who sailed with her husband aboard a New Bedford whaling vessel.
October 30 Mayflower Cemetery Tour, 4 p.m. $5 per person.
