Historic Letter Readings at the Drew Archives

Though Valentine’s Day is long since past, romance is in the air at the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society’s Drew Archives.

On June 19th at 7 pm, the Drew Archives is proud to present the first of what will be an ongoing series of Letter Readings. The series will feature readings of historic letters in the Society’s archival collection.  Each session will focus on a particular theme.  This month’s Letter Reading is entitled ‘Wherever My Body is, My Heart Is Always With You’ and features letters written between Duxbury mariners and their wives.

The life of a mariner required long periods at sea, and these letters explore the way in which both the mariners and their wives dealt with the separation, as well as providing a unique glimpse into their personalities and their marriage. The selected letters, which span the years 1800-1845, come from the Bradford, Dawes, Delano, Grafton and Waterman Family Collections, and will be read aloud by a group of volunteers.

Mark your calendars for the evening of the 19th and come to hear pieces of everyday history come to life. The Drew Archives is located in the Wright Building, at 147 St. George Street. The event is free of charge.  Those with question about the event may contact the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society at 781-934-6106.
