America’s First Visit to JAPAN April 29 – May 28, 1791: Voyage of the Lady Washington and the Grace by Scott Ridley and Hayato Sukurai. History of the daring voyage of explorer John Kendrick and Captain William Douglass to the forbidden waters of Japan in 1791, resulting in the first contact between Americans and Japanese. Based on the log book for the Grace, which was kept by Duxbury native Samuel Delano, Jr., and the only known American account of the incident. The log book was donated by the Hoyt family to the DRHS and is preserved in the DRHS’s Drew Archival Library.
