Sarah Winsor Herrick (1775-1872)

In 1815, Sarah (Winsor) Herrick accompanied her husband, Capt. Thomas Herrick, to Virginia aboard the Powhattan. While in port, Capt. Winsor succumbed to fever, leaving Sarah a widow, far from home.

Sarah Winsor was born in Duxbury to shipbuilder Nathaniel Winsor, Sr. and Olive (Soule). In 1805, at the age of thirty, she married Capt. Thomas Herrick of Gloucester, MA. After the death of her husband and having no children of her own, Sarah made her nephew, Thomas Waterman, her heir. Waterman changed his name to Thomas Waterman Herrick in 1824. In 1827, Sarah married Rev. Thomas Asbury and moved with him to Ohio. She died in Columbus, Ohio, in 1872 at the age of 97.
